The bolts, nuts, cotter pins and rivets are all common fasteners. So, what is rivet?
A rivet is a permanent mechanical fastener, which consists of a smooth cylindrical shaft with a head on one end. The tail is the end opposite to the head. The rivet is placed in a punched or drilled hole at install time, and the tail is deformed. So that, it expands to about 1.5 times the original shaft diameter, holding the rivet in place.
Semi-round head rivets, flat head rivets, countersunk head rivets, core pulling rivets, hollow rivets and semi-hollow rivets are commonly used.
